Brabants Bounce-back confirmed with World silver medal

Timmy Timmy …. Timmy Timmy was the chant in the British fan club that’s  travelled to Poland for the World Championship finals this weekend. Tim Brabants is toast of Britain today taking a monumental silver medal in the World Championships MK1 1000m event.

Brabants was secretly chuffed to bits after the race, saying:

‘I was disappointed I didn’t win…’ he mused. Then continued  ‘but silver medal is great. I’m just where I want to be in my comeback.’

Brabants really did a lot of hard work out there – from the start it looked like a carbon copy of his Olympic final. He put the power down from the start, taking almost a boat length out over the first half of the race.  Hoff and Yurenia threatened. Coming into the last 200 the British fans were shouting their lungs out willing Tim to hold on. Max Hoff (Germany) is not World champion for no reason and in the last 40 metres as the lactate acid was no doubt pumping through Brabants body, the German overtook him and grabbed the big prize. Brabants tried to respond and denied the Belarus the silver.

Rachel Cawthorn felt ‘like lead’ in her 1000m race, when she reached for her big finish over the last 200m. Sadly she felt nothing there and was edged out of a medal by Germany’s Franziska Weber, Katalin Kovacs (Hun) and Sofia Paldanius (Swe). She will be a very determined racer in the 500s tomorrow.

Again a stand-out performance from Jon Boyton & Ed Rutherford romping home in 3rd place in their B  final for a finishing position of 12th.

James Train and Matt Lawrence were 6th (15th) while Angela Hannah and Jenna Hawkey  did a fantastic job in their A final to come in 7th. A super effort from the girls. A third place in B final (12th) behind Slovakia and Hungary in MK4 1000m was respectable result in the race that finishes the season’s campaign for this crew.

The 200s brightened up the crowd in the afternoon. Jess Walker looked sharp in the heats as Jonny Schofield and Liam Heath ‘put another one on’ World Champs Craviotto and Perez (ESP) .  The womens C1 200, now achieving full medal status, took 10 minutes to get underway and even then no start gates were used. How can this class have equal status as Mens K1 or K4 – perhaps the status has come along just too soon.

McKeever, Schofield & Heath all won semi – finals impressively. Jess Walker was unlucky to finish in fourth and will race B final on Sunday.
